Generative Engine Optimization (GEO): Strategies to Get Your Business Cited by AI Search

By the EvolynFlow Team · Published

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the work of shaping your website so that AI search tools, such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, quote it and link to it in their answers. When a customer asks an AI tool who can help them, an answer that names your competitor instead of you is a lead that never reaches your inbox.

This guide explains what GEO is, how it differs from SEO and AEO, and the GEO strategies we would start with on any business website. It is written in plain English, for owners and teams in India, the USA and anywhere else, not for engineers.

What is generative engine optimization?

Generative engine optimization is the practice of making your content easy for AI search engines to find, understand and quote, so that your page becomes one of the sources cited in an AI-written answer. Where SEO aims for a ranking on a results page, GEO aims for a mention and a link inside the answer itself.

The term comes from a research paper titled “GEO: Generative Engine Optimization” by researchers at Princeton University and IIT Delhi, published in the proceedings of KDD 2024. You will also see it spelled “generative engine optimisation”, shortened to “GEO SEO”, or folded into “GEO marketing”. They all describe the same idea.

How is GEO different from SEO?

SEO helps a page rank in a list of links, while GEO helps a page get quoted inside one AI-written answer. The good news is that the two overlap heavily: Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews beyond the SEO basics, so GEO builds on SEO rather than replacing it.

What changes is the unit that wins. In classic search, the whole page competes. In AI search, a single sentence competes, because the engine lifts the clearest answer it can find and attaches the link that sits next to it.

What is the difference between AEO and GEO?

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the older term for structuring content so that a search engine can pull out a direct answer, as in featured snippets and voice assistants. GEO applies the same thinking to generative AI tools that write a new answer from several sources and cite them.

In practice, the two use the same habits: a clear question, a direct answer underneath it, and facts a reader can check. If you have already worked on AEO, you are most of the way to GEO.

Which GEO strategies actually work?

The strategies with real evidence behind them are adding sourced statistics, adding quotations, citing credible sources inline, and writing fluent, easy-to-read text. In the original GEO study, the best of these methods raised a source's visibility in AI answers by about 40%, while old-style keyword stuffing scored below pages that were left unchanged.

These are the generative engine optimization best practices we would start with:

  1. 1.Answer first. Put the question in a heading and answer it fully in the first two sentences underneath. Detail and examples come after. That opening block is what an AI engine is most likely to lift.
  2. 2.Back every number with a link. A statistic with a source beside it is easier for an AI to trust and repeat. Never publish a number you cannot point to.
  3. 3.Quote real people and real documents. A short quotation from an official source, a study or your own team gives the engine a clean, attributable sentence.
  4. 4.Write plainly. Fluent, simple sentences performed well in the study. Short paragraphs, one idea each.
  5. 5.Keep links inline, next to the claim. A list of sources at the bottom of the page is detached from the sentence it supports.
  6. 6.Let the AI crawlers in. If your firewall or robots.txt blocks AI search bots, nothing else on this list matters. More on this below.
  7. 7.Add structured data. Article, FAQPage, Organization or LocalBusiness schema tells machines plainly what the page is and who wrote it.
  8. 8.Show who you are. A named author or team, a real address and an about page help both people and machines decide whether to trust you.

The study also found that what works varies by subject area, so treat this list as a starting point and test it on your own pages.

How do you get cited by ChatGPT?

To get cited by ChatGPT, your site first has to be reachable by OpenAI's search crawler, and then your page has to hold the clearest, best-sourced answer to the question being asked. OpenAI states that sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, so check your robots.txt and any bot-protection settings before anything else.

OpenAI runs separate bots for separate jobs. OAI-SearchBot is used to surface websites in ChatGPT's search features, while GPTBot relates to training AI models. You can block training and still allow search, if that is what your business prefers.

Once the door is open, “how to rank in ChatGPT” comes down to the strategies above. Answer the question directly, use the same words your customers use when they ask it, and back each claim with a source. This is the core of what people call LLM optimization.

How do you appear in Google AI Overviews?

To appear in Google AI Overviews, a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet; there is no separate application or special markup. Google says the same SEO best practices apply to AI features as to the rest of Search.

Google also explains that AI Overviews and AI Mode may use a “query fan-out” technique, running several related searches across subtopics to build one answer. That is a strong reason to cover the follow-up questions a reader would ask on the same page, the way this guide moves from “what is GEO” to “how do I measure it”.

Be careful with snippet controls. Settings such as nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex limit what Google can show from your page, and they apply to AI features too.

How do you rank in Perplexity?

To rank in Perplexity, allow its search crawler, PerplexityBot, in your robots.txt, and give it pages with direct, sourced answers. Perplexity says PerplexityBot is designed to surface and link websites in its search results and is not used to crawl content for AI foundation models.

Perplexity shows its sources prominently beside every answer, so the habits that win a ChatGPT citation work here too. A clear question, a two-sentence answer and an inline source are the pattern to repeat.

How do you measure GEO results?

Measure GEO results by tracking whether AI tools mention and link to you for the questions your customers ask, and by watching the visits those answers send. There is no single official GEO metric yet, so a simple, regular routine works better than waiting for a perfect report.

A practical starting routine:

  • Keep a fixed list of questions. Ten to twenty questions your customers really ask. Ask them in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google every month and note whether your site is cited, and which page.
  • Check Search Console. Google says traffic from AI features is included in your overall search traffic in Search Console, under the “Web” search type. It is not split out separately.
  • Watch your referrals. In your analytics, look for visits arriving from AI tools such as ChatGPT and Perplexity, and which pages they land on.
  • Track enquiries, not only visits. Ask new enquiries how they found you. “ChatGPT told me about you” is the result that matters.

Where should you start with GEO?

Start with access and answers: make sure AI crawlers can reach your site, then rewrite your most important pages so each one answers its main question in the first two sentences. Everything else on this page builds on those two steps.
